Moka Pot vs Espresso Machine: What Is the Real Difference?

A moka pot and an espresso machine both make strong, small coffees, but they work differently and cost very different amounts. Here is how to choose.

How they work

A moka pot heats water in the bottom chamber. Steam pressure pushes the water up through the coffee and into the top chamber. The pressure is low compared with a machine. An espresso machine uses a pump to force hot water through finely ground, tightly packed coffee at high pressure. Product pages list pressure for our machines, such as 20 bar on the 20 Bar Professional Espresso Machine with Milk Frother.

How the coffee tastes

Moka pot coffee is strong and bold, closer to espresso than drip, but it does not have the same thick crema. Espresso is more concentrated and is the base for lattes and cappuccinos. If you plan to make milk drinks, a machine or a frothing setup will serve you better. See how to froth milk at home.

Cost

Effort and cleanup

A moka pot takes five minutes and a stove. There is little to maintain beyond rinsing and drying. Machines heat quickly and are convenient but need regular cleaning and descaling. Our guide on using a moka pot covers the method.

Space and travel

A moka pot is compact and durable. If you travel, a portable espresso maker may be better. Read best portable espresso maker for travel.

Which to choose

  • Choose a moka pot for strong coffee at a low price with little fuss.
  • Choose a machine if you want espresso drinks with milk and are happy to spend more.
  • Choose a manual espresso maker if you want espresso-style coffee without counter space or power.

Either way, a good grinder helps. See grinders under $50.
